Photograph me like a woman
June 2, 2025A woman recently reached out to me for new headshots. She had some done by another photographer but didn’t like them. The moment she showed me the images, I understood why.
She had been photographed like a man.
Now, that might sound strange — but it’s a real thing. She was posed with broad, square shoulders, a stiff stance, camera angle from below eye-level, and an intense expression. The look was powerful, yes — but it didn’t reflect her. It lacked the warmth, openness, and approachability that were a natural part of her presence.
Photographing women is often different.
It’s not about creating a generic “power pose.” It’s about showing the kind of power that feels true to you — whether that’s strong and direct, soft and glowing, or a mix of both. Women aren’t one-dimensional, and our photos shouldn’t be either.
When I photograph women, I pay attention to posture, light, expression, and authenticity. I choose flattering angles that reflect confidence without rigidity. I focus on softness and strength — more curves than angles, more connection than intensity, and expressions that feel natural, not forced.
So that’s exactly what we did for her. We talked about her brand, her energy, and how she wanted to show up in the world. She described herself as warm, confident, and approachable — someone who makes others feel comfortable. And then we created images that felt like that.
It’s important to me that your photos feel like you — and that they represent you, your brand or business.
Of course, there’s no one way to “photograph like a woman.” Some women want bold and edgy. Some want soft and romantic. Some want clean and modern. The point is: it should be your choice. There’s no one-size-fits-all formula, and there shouldn’t be.
Great photography is about intentionality. It’s about creating space for your personality to come through and showing up in your photos the way you want to show up in the world.
So if you’ve ever looked at a headshot and thought, “That doesn’t feel like me,” know this: it’s not your fault. You don’t need to change — the photography does.
You deserve to be photographed like you. Strong. Soft. Bold. Glowing. Real.
Let’s photograph you like a woman — whatever that means to you.
